2006 Festival of Bands

The 40th Northmont Festival of Bands took place Saturday, September 2 at Northmont Stadium on the newly dedicated Matt Dudon Memorial Field, the new turf purchased through private donations, and the Band, Football, and Soccer Booster organizations. After a long day of final preparations in an on and off drizzle the festival was kicked off by the Northmont High School Marching Band playing the National Anthem in what turned out to be the last significant rain of the evening.

Marion Local’s performance of a nautical theme couldn’t have began with better special effects courtesy of Mother Nature with the little bit of wind blowing a light mist against their “twin masted sailing ship” prop. Performances by West Carrollton, Brookville, Carroll, Miamisburg, Fairborn, Beavercreek, Bellbrook, and Centerville were mostly without rain. Northmont finished up the non-competitive festival with their show Ellis Island: Gateway to America.

America is a nation of immigrants, and our immigrant history is a profound part of our American mythology. In the history of American immigration, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are icons of immense significance. In the years of operation, from 1892 to 1954, more than twelve million immigrants, over 70% of all immigrants to the United States, passed through Ellis Island, the processing station which was “the gateway to America.” Today, more than 40% of the U.S. population, over 100 million Americans can trace their roots to an ancestor who came through Ellis Island. The stories of Ellis Island immigrants are in many ways our family stories: whether they are tales of our grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, or friends, so many Americans can relate to these experiences as part of our collective history.

The Northmont High School Marching Band has been a consistent finalist at Bands of America Regional’s and was a 2000 Grand Finalist. The band was also named the Grand Champion of the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Marching Championships and Sweepstakes winner of the 2006 Fiesta Bowl Parade. The Colorguard was also the winner of Best Auxiliary with a score of 99 out of 100. The Band is under the direction of David Armbruster and Joni Graham and is lead by field commanders Jerred Graham and Karyn Sleppy.

Congrats to the Pit Crew (The Legendary Northmont Pit Dad's (and Patty)) for their selection as Outstanding Pit Crew! Thanks also go to the Pit volunteers whose assistance was greatly appreciated.

The news was heard to comment that the Northmont Band was going to Phoenix to support the OSU Buckeyes at the Fiesta Bowl, but the Band knew they were going to Phoenix months before the Buckeyes did so it must be the Buckeyes who went to Phoenix to support the Northmont Band. Thanks OSU.

Thank you to everyone who worked or participated in this year's Band Festival! All the shows were wonderful.

Special thanks go out to Grove City High School Marching Band for their comments and tribute to Mr. Richwine's years as Northmont's Band Director. It was a real treat and honor to hear Grove City play Northmont's Fight song. They did an awesome job!
